Merging documents in OpenOffice lets you compare the content in one document with the content in another, and then create a single document with the preferred content. Once the merging is complete, you have to review the differences between the documents and determine which sections to keep and which to remove. Documents in OpenOffice Writer can be merged, as can spreadsheets in OpenOffice Calc, but other OpenOffice programs don't offer this feature.
Merging Documents
In both Writer and Calc, click 'Edit,' 'Changes' and then 'Merge Document.' Select the item you want to merge with the document, and then click 'Open.' Sometimes the documents won't accept a merge command. In that case, click 'Edit,' and then 'Compare Documents.' Click 'Accept' or 'Reject' on each change in the list to finish merging the documents. Changes are typically made up of either adding or deleting material from the document. If different people made changes to the same document, each change will be outlined in a color specific to that author.

OpenOffice is not a file converter, but you can use it to add a JPG to a document and then export that document as a PDF file. Although it can't open PDF files, OpenOffice can save valid PDF files that you can later edit in Adobe Acrobat. Furthermore, OpenOffice Draw can open JPG files and export them as PDF files natively. Using OpenOffice Draw is easier than inserting the image into a document and using Writer to create a PDF file.
